Optimal option: why porcelain veneers are better than composite

  • Written by

Okay, we get it: composite veneers are the cheaper option. And sure, sometimes in life we can get away with the cheaper option, like choosing cheaper home goods to their flashy, equally-as-effective counterparts.

But veneers aren’t one of those things. When it comes to anything regarding your dental health, you should always choose the better - and therefore slightly-more-expensive option.

Here are some reasons why:

  1. They actually do the desired job

Porcelain veneers - unlike their composite resin counterpart - actually do their intended job. After all, this is a typically aesthetic treatment, one designed to beautify your smile after years of staining, so you should really choose the option that is going to do what you set out for it to do.

Unfortunately, composite resin is highly porous, and is therefore susceptible to staining, and given that one of the main reasons behind this treatment is to alleviate the effects of staining and general discolouration, you can see why you might want to go for the anti-porous, stain-resistant option - porcelain!

So, if the main reason you are enlisting this treatment is to alleviate the effects of staining, there is absolutely no point in receiving the composite option - it will only stain again and likely leave you wanting to replace them with the best option anyway - so you might as well do it in the first place!

  1. It is stronger

If one of your reasons for enlisting this treatment is to ward off the risk of chipping your teeth when eating, this is once again the best option. Sure, composite has come a long way in recent years, and is certainly much tougher than it used to be, but it still doesn’t stand up to the strength and durability of its superior counterpart.

Incredibly strong and chip-resistant, this option can actually reduce the risk of further chipping or cracking when eating, ensuring that this is, once again, the preferred option.

  1. They are genuinely brighter

Coming back to the aesthetic side of things, and you’re probably looking for a style that is going to brighten your teeth. Once again, this is a largely aesthetic procedure, and one in which you simply want to get the optimal results. When applied, porcelain veneers are a much brighter, shinier material, guaranteed to provide your smile with that effervescent glow you’ve been seeking.

  1. You know you will be receiving it from a highly skilled dentist

Unlike composite, there is a lot of required skill to ensure the job of applying this style is done properly. They are more complex and therefore more difficult to apply to the patient. As such, when you receive this treatment you can trust that you will be receiving from a highly skilled and experienced dentist, one who has your best interests close at heart and one who will get the job done with skill and precision.

  1. They are just the safer option

At the end of the day, there can be no comparison between composite and porcelain veneers, with the latter being the clear winner when it comes to aesthetic, durability and strength. The last thing you want is to receive a treatment that isn’t going to provide its intended service or wear off after time - you will only find yourself making another trip to the dentist!

As such, it is always worth putting in a little extra to ensure you receive the option that is a clear winner on all levels.
